Addressing Health Disparities within Primary Care Clinics

About this session

We must focus on strengthening primary care teams' ability to address health inequities and meet the needs of our communities. The pressing need to provide access to physical and mental health services and address the ongoing health inequities for high-risk, underserved and ethno-racial minority populations is greater now than ever. Utilizing behavioral health providers as behavioral health consultants in integrated primary care will create significant positive impacts on vulnerable populations. Attend this session and learn about Dr. Eboni Winford's strategy to help address this critical systemic healthcare challenge.

Mental Health America of Greater Houston, in partnership with Rice University, is proud to announce the launch of the Behavioral Health Consultant – Certificate Course in February 2023. For this OpenRICE session, Dr. Eboni Winford, one of the course's expert faculty members, will briefly discuss how a licensed behavioral health provider trained as a behavioral health consultant can help close the health disparities gap in primary care. Dr. Winford is a licensed psychologist and the Director of Research and Health Equity at Cherokee Health Systems. Dr. Winford will review the role of the behavioral health consultant in improving ethno-racial disparities, review key definitions and known disparities, outline a framework of equity and justice, and discuss strategies to close the gap in these disparities.

This session is brought to you in partnership with Professional and Corporate Programs at Rice University and the Mental Health America of Greater Houston.
